The Politics of Play

The course will discuss the phenomenon of play and its implications in politics, art, and economics. What is the meaning and role of play in contemporary society? Is there an essential relationship between play and artistic practice? What is the relevance of play in the political realm? How to think of the myriad dichotomies between play and labor, play and utility, play and seriousness, play and game? Can the concept of play illuminate our relationship to literary fiction and philosophical speculation? What is the affinity between theoretical and financial speculation? Readings range from Johan Huizinga and Roger Caillois to Mario Pedrosa and Hélio Oiticica, from Friedrich Schiller to Hannah Arendt and Max Horkheimer, from Giorgio Agamben to Yukio Mishima and Waly Salomão.
