Annual and Perennial Plant Identification and Use

Course information provided by the Courses of Study 2016-2017.

Focuses primarily on the identification, cultural requirements, and use of northern climate annual and perennial plants in the landscape. Practical hands-on gardening experience at selected campus locations. In addition, a three-day required field trip to regional gardens, nurseries, and other industry relevant locations provides students with a great opportunity to gain exposure to the horticulture industry.

Outcomes
  • Know by sight approximately 300-plus herbaceous garden plants.
  • Know the Genus, species, common name and Family of each of these plants.
  • Become familiar with basic aspects of the propagation, production and marketing of these plants on local, national and worldwide levels.
  • Utilize outside resources (printed or electronic) to develop and evaluate methods of propagating, growing and utilizing an annual or perennial (at the Genus or species level) we do not cover in class.
  • Develop a lifelong love and appreciation of herbaceous garden plants.
