Basic biochemistry and cell biology related to processes involved in protein synthesis and degradation and the regulation of these processes. Scientific literature will be used to provide examples of regulation of each of these processes, selected for their relevance to human nutrition and metabolism.

Outcomes
  • Explain basic biological processes involved in protein synthesis (e.g., transcription, RNA processing, RNA stability/degradation, translation, posttranslational modification, trafficking) and protein degradation (e.g., ubiquitin-proteasome system, vesicular degradation via endocytosis/autophagy/lysosomal degradation; and targeted degradation by calpains and caspases).
  • Give examples of how each of these processes is regulated. Give specific examples of how each of these processes is regulated by nutrients.
