Course information provided by the Courses of Study 2016-2017.

This seminar centers on the experiences of immigrants and refugees in the United States, exploring the role that musical activities play in building and maintaining community identity and transnational ties. Focusing specifically on movement between the Global South and North, we will examine the meaning and permeability of borders, the construction and negotiation of ethnic, racial, and national identifications, the development of hyphenated identities, and the ways in which gender, class, and sexuality inform these processes. Seminar participants will engage anthropological and feminist scholarship on immigration, migration, transnationalism and diaspora in dialogue with critical historical and ethnographic work on music and performance.
