MAE 4780

MAE 4780

Course information provided by the Courses of Study 2016-2017.

This course covers the analysis and design of linear systems in both the frequency and time domains. The course includes a laboratory that examines modeling and control of representative dynamic processes. The frequency domain aspects are analyzed via Laplace transforms, transfer functions, root locus, and frequency response methods. The time domain aspects are analyzed via state space models, stability, controllability, observability, state feedback, and observers.

When Offered Fall.

Prerequisites/Corequisites Prerequisite: CHEME 3720 or MAE 3260 or permission of instructor.

Outcomes
  • Students will be able to obtain the linearization of a non-linear system about an operating point.
  • Construct a transfer function representation of a linear dynamical system.
  • Manipulate block diagrams and transfer functions.
  • Understand the relationship between a linear system and its frequency response, and know how to construct a Bode plot.
  • Know how to design traditional controllers such as Proportional, Integral, Derivate (PID), and Lead-Lag.
  • Understand the concepts of stability, including gain and phase margins and Nyquist stability condition.
  • Design control systems in the frequency domain using state space and Bode/Nyquist techniques.
  • Design control systems in the time domain using state space and Root Locus techniques.
  • Be able to apply the tools learned in the class to physical problems.
