Course information provided by the Courses of Study 2016-2017.

This course examines the nature of service and leadership as integral to all forms of practice, whether in a professional public health career or in a leadership role in personal and community life.  Service is a way of being in practice in all parts of our lives, rather than a community activity or act of charity that is seen as an adjunct to 'real life work.'  Service and leadership are considered in different health care contexts:  New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation, hospitals and clinics, senior citizen organizations, transitional homeless housing sites, federal, state and local public health agencies, and community based health programs.

When Offered Fall, Spring.

Permission Note Enrollment limited to: Global Public Health majors.
Prerequisites/Corequisites Prerequisite: HE 4050, NS 1600.

Outcomes
  • This description will summarize current understandings of the magnitude, distribution, causes, consequences and efforts to address a public health problem they learned about in their internship, following guidance provided in their eportfolios.
  • The characteristics, interests and contributions of their host organization or research project (in relation to the public health issue) will be described, following guidance provided in their eportfolios. This will include documenting the perspectives of key informants within and/or outside the organization concerning their own organization's contributions and additional efforts needed to address the problem.
  • This analysis will integrate the material from Outcomes 1 and 2 with the other material assembled in the core course (NS4xxx), to create an integrative analysis of the public health issue, include the student's own views concerning the necessary actions and obstacles to progress, following guidance provided in their eportfolios.
  • This reflection will identify what was learned about efforts to address public health problems, how this differed from or complemented what has been learned in academic courses and how the experience may have further shaped the student's professional and career goals, following guidance provided in their eportfolios.
