Course Description
Course information provided by the Courses of Study 2016-2017.
This semester we will examine the construction of a presidential imaginary- how the president, as represented in literature, film, television, advertising- shapes public policy and influences political opinion. Our focus will be on iconic presidents (Lincoln, JFK, Nixon, Reagan, Obama) and First Ladies (Hillary Clinton, Laura Bush, Michelle Obama) that have served as recurrent subjects for a diverse range of media. How are past presidents reimagined in a contemporary context? How have cultural representations impacted the institution of the presidency? Our seminar throughout this exciting election year will be guided by a central question: what cultural forms are needed to sustain a body politic?
