Totalitarianism: History and Theory

The concept of totalitarianism depicts the twentieth century as an age of wars and genocide.  Its history, nevertheless, reveals a multiplicity of scholarly and political uses.  The aim of this course is to outline the trajectory of this controversial idea, from fascist Italy in the 1920s to the present, passing through the harrowing experiences of Stalinism and National Socialism.  Shaping political theory and historiography, this concept reveals some virtues and many limits, which explain why it has been so enthusiastically endorsed and virulently criticized.  This course will take a critical look at the crucial pieces of this debate.
