Causal Reasoning and Policy Evaluation

Course information provided by the Courses of Study 2016-2017.

Teaches how to evaluate causal claims, e.g., about the effectiveness of government policies. Students learn to apply their knowledge of statistics and regression analysis to investigate the effectiveness of important health, welfare, and other public policies using data from real-life examples. Emphasizes the logic of causal inference, and critical thinking about what kinds of evidence are most convincing.

Prerequisites/Corequisites Prerequisite: PAM 2100 , PAM 3100 . Recommended prerequisite: PAM 2000 , PAM 2300 .

Outcomes
  • Be familiar with causal reasoning, and how to evaluate whether common research designs support causal conclusions.
  • Be proficient at using statistical analysis software to create evidence to investigate causal claims.
  • Gain experience working on analysis and presentation projects as a team, and learn to effectively communicate the results of quantitative analyses.
