This graduate seminar will survey recent scholarship about the discourse and historical practices of domesticity in early modern China, Korea, and Japan from the fourteenth to the early twentieth century. Our discussion focuses on the marriage, the family, and the household in relation to the shifting meanings of femininity, interiority, subjectivity, and sexuality. By critically reviewing and comparing the recent approaches in literature, history, and gender studies, this seminar provides students an opportunity to conceive their own theoretical framework upon which more specialized research can be built.
