Course Description
Course information provided by the 2026-2027 Catalog.
This asynchronous, 3-week course introduces students to basic concepts in the scientific method, research techniques, genetics, evolution, biochemistry, cell biology, and the anatomy and physiology of major organ systems. We will compare the structure and function of organ systems among major classes of animals (e.g., invertebrates, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals), and we will learn about different species that evolved unique or “extreme” adaptations in these systems, enabling them to survive and reproduce in various environmental conditions. Topics are taught in pre-recorded lecture videos, allowing students to learn at their own pace. Projects and mini exams are assigned each week to assess student progress. In the final project, students create a new animal and explain how its physiology reflects adaptions to its environment/habitat.
Prerequisites High School course in Biology and/or Chemistry.
Distribution Requirements (BIO-AG, BSC-AG)
Last 4 Terms Offered (None)
Learning Outcomes
- Explain the scientific method, develop hypotheses, and design basic scientific experiments.
- Identify, evaluate, and summarize scientific research papers.
- Describe fundamental molecules and biological/life processes necessary for survival.
- Identify and describe the function of key cells, structures, and organs of major organ systems in animals.
- Compare and contrast organ systems among different animals and discuss the changes (adaptations) that occurred in these systems throughout evolutionary history.
- Integrate and apply knowledge of physiology, adaptation, and evolution to predict physiological adaptations to different environmental conditions.
