Acquaint students with the major issues and problems in international textiles and apparel production to demonstrate how problems in development are addressed in India and Sri Lanka. The lectures/discussions establish the global and regional contexts for sustainable agricultural development and focus on development challenges in Asia through cases in India and Sri Lanka. Students will be automatically enrolled in the field trip component. This course is the field trip component which consists of a two to three week field study trip designed to provide students with an opportunity to observe the apparel and textile industry abroad to promote interdisciplinary exchange among faculty, staff, students and their international counterparts.

Learning Outcomes

  • Become acquainted with the history of textile and apparel production in South Asia and its connection to global trade and identify contemporary political, environmental, social, technological, and economic challenges and opportunities facing the textile and apparel industries in India and Sri Lanka.
  • Understand the differences, problems, and possibilities of the local and global fiber to fashion supply chains in India and Sri Lanka and become familiar with current and emerging technologies in fiber production and processing, textile manufacturing, garment construction, embellishment, wet processing, and shipping.
  • Address design challenges and innovate sustainable design solutions by bringing together the perspectives of fiber/material science, apparel design, marketing, management, and social sciences.
  • Develop teamwork skills, cultural competence, and ability to work effectively across social, temporal, and disciplinary differences.
  • Cultivate cultural competencies and firsthand knowledge of manufacturing through active participation in traveling through apparel and textile production facilities in India and Sri Lanka.
