As part of the Global Citizenship and Sustainability Program sequence, this actual in-country experience provides students with hands-on introductory experience of community-based research. In addition, students will have an exposure to the higher educational system in Malaysia, its philosophy and approach toward community-based research and the opportunity to work and learn together with UNIMAS, and UCTS students regarding sustainable development, community and cultural resilience for indigenous communities.

When Offered Multi-semester course, Winter.

Fees Course fee: Students participating in the GC&S program and going abroad are responsible for a $2,000 course fee payable to your bursar account to cover in-country housing, in-country transportation, activities and any travel expenses such as passports, visas, health and travel insurance, airport departure tax, necessary immunizations, and spending money.
Prerequisites/Corequisites Prerequisite: NTRES 4000.

Comments Students must enroll in NTRES 4001 and NTRES 4002 to receive a final grade.

Outcomes
  • Students will be able to demonstrate reflective practices (oral, written and visual), especially related to global citizenship, cultural diversity, community-based research, professional growth, leadership, and teamwork.
  • Students will be able to experience and learn about indigenous Malaysian cultural norms.
  • Students will be able to work effectively in an interdisciplinary, cross-cultural team.
  • Students will be able to understand local community perspectives about resilience and sustainable development in Malaysia.
