This course is a study of sports in the ancient world through a variety of primary sources, including textual, visual, and archaeological. Students will use the comparative method to study ancient sports from different cultures, including the ancient Mediterranean, as well as India, Japan, and Mesoamerica. Sports will be considered from historical, sociological, and gender students perspectives. Special focus is given to ancient Greece and Rome, with an investigation of the ancient Olympics, training, combat sports, and sport infrastructure.
