Marine and Coastal Conservation Biology

Introduction to the topic of conservation biology of marine and coastal ecosystems. This is a critical subject: over 70% of our planet is ocean; and 80% of the world's population (50% of Americans) live within 50-60 miles of the ocean. High levels of human use of marine and coastal systems often lead to conflict between natural ecosystems and humans. Focuses on major principles of conservation biology and methods to bring human communities into a better relationship with natural resources. We use examples of the following from the Gulf of Maine and beyond: coastal ecosystem processes; coastal biodiversity; threats to coastal ecosystems; species conservation; conserving ecosystem function and services. Course projects involve working with a local land manager to construct real world management goals and actions.

Prerequisites/Corequisites Prerequisite: one semester of college-level biology.

Comments BIOSM 2770 is not equivalent to BIOSM 1620.
