Behind every legislative action and administrative decision is a community of stakeholders who utilize communications strategies and tactics to influence public agendas and policy outcomes. This course examines the strategic communications ecosystem that shapes policymaking at the federal level. Students will explore how corporations, advocacy organizations, trade associations, nonprofits, and grassroots movements communicate with policymakers, the media, and the public to advance – or impede – public policy proposals. Topics include message development, stakeholder mapping, lobbying, coalition building, media relations, crisis communications, digital advocacy, fundraising, and reputation management. Throughout the semester, current and former practitioners will provide real-world perspectives through guest lectures.
