Course Description
Course information provided by the 2026-2027 Catalog.
This course introduces the theory and practice of ecological restoration, emphasizing how core ecological principles inform restoration planning and decision-making. Students will apply ecological theory to real-world terrestrial and aquatic restoration scenarios, predict ecological outcomes, and develop site-specific restoration plans using case studies and applied problem solving. In the lab, students will take multiple field trips to visit restoration sites in-person and meet with practitioners. We emphasize collaborative work through team-based restoration projects, constructive peer review, and engagement with restoration practitioners to understand real-world constraints and decision-making processes. The course is designed for students wishing to engage in restoration ecology and will give students the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge.
Enrollment Information Recommended prerequisite: The equivalent of two semesters of college level ecology, environmental sciences, or landscape architecture.
Exploratory Studies (CU-SBY)
Last 4 Terms Offered 2020FA, 2019FA, 2017FA, 2015FA
Learning Outcomes
- Distinguish between core ecological concepts, including resilience vs. resistance, succession types, and diversity components, and explain their significance in restoration contexts.| Apply ecological theory to real-world restoration scenarios, predicting likely outcomes across terrestrial and aquatic systems.| Develop and present a comprehensive ecological restoration plan tailored to specific site conditions.| Demonstrate foundational knowledge of plant taxonomy, invasive species, and relevant Federal & State regulations.
- Identify and critique mistakes in restoration plans and propose evidence-based alternatives, including constructive peer review.
- Engage professionally with restoration practitioners, demonstrating the ability to interrogate real-world decision-making processes.
