Course Description
Course information provided by the 2026-2027 Catalog.
Forced or chosen, migration exacts complex costs. How have writers from across the globe adopted and changed the novel -- a form associate with rise of imperialism -- to tell stories about migration and exile? How do these aesthetic challenges also dovetail with or diverge from the aesthetics of detention spaces and borders? Is there a useful aesthetic theory or creative practice for stories about migration when aesthetics have been closely tied to power? How do affective structures lean on or escape aesthetic habits to make new meaning, tell new stories that don’t simply end in acculturation or assimilation? We will engage with these questions by studying novels, art, and memoirs alongside recent theories of aesthetics and affect.
