Course information provided by the 2026-2027 Catalog.

This graduate level course considers the phenomenon of “magic” broadly construed, in the ancient Mediterranean, with particular attention paid to the manner in which the practice of magic is gendered. By considering Latin texts about magic (in English translation with the option to read in Latin) alongside material culture preserving magical texts in Latin, Greek, and Coptic, this course will provide opportunities to understand what and who practiced what we now call “magic” from the High Empire into Christian Late Antiquity.
