Relations between Africa and Asia are prominent in the news today, particularly through references to Chinese political and economic development partnerships with African states. While these relationships are witnessing renewed attention in the West, scholars of Africa and Asia know that the interconnectedness and solidarity between Africa and Asia are not new, but have a millennia-long precedent defined by ancient Indian Ocean trade and Third World solidarity movements that emerged during the anti-colonial period and the Cold War. What unfolds when we speak not of recent state-state relations, but of long and continued histories of an Afro-Asian world? This course will explore South-South solidarities, identities, and resistance movements, and will support students’ critical thinking and writing through activities, research papers, and analytical essays.
