Course information provided by the 2026-2027 Catalog.

This course explores Socialist Realism as a genre in Asia across literary production, cinema, visual culture, and architecture. It argues that Socialist Realism was not realist and ponders what it intended to communicate to audiences. Exploring Marxism, the history of socialist movements in Asia, and their cultural production, this course takes cultural objects as the entry point into a wide array of subjects: decolonization, nationalism and cosmopolitanism, alternative potentialities and ideal futurities, women's liberation and socialist nation-building, etc. In this course, students will learn how to think critically about Asian socialism and its agendas and analyse cultural production in relation to its historical milieu.
