Culture, Craft, and Technologies of Ancient Rome examines how ancient Roman built environments and technologies were created, used, and experienced. Through evidence from material culture, organic residue studies, spatial analysis, and ancient texts, students investigate the social, economic, and sensory dimensions of Roman production and technological practice. Co-meeting with the chemical engineering course The AlChemE of an Empire, archaeology students will engage directly with scientific and engineering evidence for ancient technologies. By combining social science interpretation with scientific reconstruction of ancient systems, students will develop deeper insight into how technological choices shaped daily life in the Roman world.
