This course gives students direct hands-on experience with fisheries management through field trips, including visits to a fish hatchery, a fish ladder, a Great Lakes fisheries laboratory, and a Cornell fisheries research station. The students will learn about approaches to fisheries management through discussions with fisheries professionals. Activities include the use of various fish sampling gears and sample analysis techniques. Each student is required to maintain a written journal describing activities and concepts learned from each field trip that is submitted at the end of the semester.

Learning Outcomes

  • Use fishing methods discussed in the companion course NTRES 3110/5110.
  • Understand selectivity of different fishing gear and the way they can be deployed.
  • Understand the issues associated with rearing sport-fish in hatcheries for stocking in lakes.
  • Explore fishing management practices through discussions with state and federal Fisheries Biologists.
