PHYS 1203

PHYS 1203

Course information provided by the Courses of Study 2024-2025.

This course offers an opportunity to discuss fundamental ideas about the physical world, the applications of these ideas to big questions in modern physics, and the relationship between physics, fundamental science, and society. By the end of the course, students will be able to: 1) Describe and discuss fundamental concepts in physics such as forces, linearand rotational motion, and energy, 2) Apply those fundamental physics concepts to discuss cutting edge physics ideas such as special and general relativity, quantum mechanics, gravitational waves, black holes, and particle physics, 3) Use examples of historical investigations to explore how scientific knowledge develops and evolves over time, 4) Consider how fundamental physics relates to students' major and career interests and to society more broadly, such as to debate the role and funding of fundamental research, understand issues of representation and diversity in science, and evaluate how science is perceived by the public, and 5) Not immediately respond "I hate physics" and maybe even look back fondly or be inspired to learn more beyond this course.

When Offered Spring.

Permission Note Intended for: non-science majors.
