Course Description
Course information provided by the Courses of Study 2023-2024.
Demonstrates fundamental principles and applied aspects of mammalian and avian reproduction. A limited number of live animals are used in some demonstrations. Dissection and examination of tissues from vertebrate animals are included in selected laboratories.

Prerequisites/Corequisites Prerequisite or corequisite: ANSC 2400.

- Students will be able to describe the comparative functional reproductive anatomy and histology across a range of domestic and companion animals, wildlife species, and humans.
- Students will be able to describe endocrine organs and tissues and relate their developmental and functional influence on reproductive structure and function.
- Students will be able to explain the developmental, structural, and physiological changes in male and female germ cells required for gamete transport, fertilization, and early embryo development.
- Students will be able to evaluate the basis for reproductive technologies and their potential impact on genetic improvement, reproductive efficiency, and species conservation.
- Students will be able to explain fundamental cryobiological principles as they relate to cryopreservation of gametes, embryos, and somatic tissues for subsequent use in a broad range of reproductive technologies.
- Students will be able to compare species differences in placental development and function and relate differences to support of embryo and fetal development and mechanisms of parturition.
