Course Description

This course is an introduction to the theory and practice of fundamental research, quantitative equity security selection, and equity portfolio management. Students have the unique opportunity as part of this course to manage the Cayuga Fund, a student managed fund with $1 million in assets under management from the Cornell University endowment. Students will serve as fundamental analysts, quantitative analysts and portfolio specialists for the fund. Instruction on analysis, portfolio management and the investment business are included in this course. Students are expected to assume leadership for managing the Fund by the end of the semester. The experience is similar to that offered to rising analysts and portfolio managers in buy-side investment firms. Students will learn credit research techniques, maintain their stock coverage and continue managing the Fund in the spring.

Permission Note Priority given to: second-year MBAs who successfully completed either NBA 5060 or finance immersion. Non-Johnson students who successfully completed NBA 4120 are eligible to apply. Admission is competitive and merit-based once application acceptance exceeds 12.
Prerequisites/Corequisites Corequisite: NBA 5121.
Comments Students will be assigned to sectors and portfolio teams, and must prepare fundamental micro-industry definitions before the Fundamental Module begins.

Instruction Mode: Hybrid-Online and In Person
The Instructor for this class will be teaching virtually. Enrollment by Permission Only Apply through Faculty. Application closing dates are well in advance of registration. This class is a year long class. Hybrid: rotational in person attendance. You will be notified of your eligibility to attend in person and students should connect remotely until a seat is assigned. There will be no enrollment from a wait list into a class if you have a time conflict or if it will create an overload. Students dropping this course after February 22, 2021 will be assessed a fee of $100. The deadline to drop the class without a “W” is April 5, 2021 @11:59pm but you will still be charged the $100 late fee. This course is a Management Science Elective.
