    Cornell's Lake Source Cooling project: innovation, impact, and outreach will center around parallel team-based assessments of four aspects of Cornell's 20-year experiment with Lake Source Cooling (LSC). LSC is a unique experiment in alternative methods of climate control for a large facility, taking advantage of proximity to the depths of Cayuga Lake. Teams of students will focus on energy/greenhouse-gas savings, economic return on investment, lake impacts, and outreach to the Ithaca community. Students will work primarily in one group, but regular interchange and class-wide meetings will ensure exchange across perspectives and groups. We will meet regularly with the engineers and facilities management team for the Lake Source Cooling project, and analyze their 20 years of data in order to complete our assessments. The final product of this course will be a report to Cornell Facilities Management, and potentially a manuscript describing the LSC project and its outcomes for submission to a scientific journal.

    This experiential, active, project-oriented field course emphasizes methodologies used by ecological artists and scientists who conduct expeditionary and place-based field work. Students will build upon on a conceptual framework in the ecological arts provided through lectures, readings, and artist talks, then each student will collect, catalog, and study an environment through the lens of eco-art. In addition to learning and employing traditional scientific tools and methods, an emphasis will be placed on using conventional and unconventional methodologies in the arts and humanities to collect, analyze and interpret data, objects, natural phenomena and sensorial experiences in the field. Students will design an ecological-based creative project focused on an environment of their choice. Based on and at this location, students will conduct background research, observe, collect, record, interpret, and produce both experimental and finished projects. As the range of eco-art practices are diverse, from performance to the production of physical objects, environmental intervention and social practice, the course provides hands-on experience in an array of creative strategies.
