This course will cover key laboratory and field techniques, methods and concepts in public health vector biology and control. Students will learn laboratory methods for determining blood meal hosts, methods for determining sugar feeding patterns of mosquitoes and how to conduct resistance bioassays for ticks and mosquitoes. In addition, data management and collection strategies, mapping and spatial analysis will be covered. Public health skills including program management and grant writing will be included. Additional skills may be addressed based on the student needs and interests. The goal is to provide students with hands on experience leading to competency in vector biology practice.

Prerequisites/Corequisites Prerequisite: ENTOM 4520, ENTOM 4521.

Outcomes
  • 1. Students will learn fundamental methods and approaches in public health entomology--1.1 describe the methods of different tests and approaches for detecting, investigating, and describing arthropod disease vectors; 1.2 describe the pros and cons of different methods and when to utilize them; 1.3 be aware of the most up-to-date methodology and considerations for detecting, investigating and describing vectors; 1.4 utilize best practices and systems for program management; 1.5 write a compelling public health grant proposal.
  • 2. Students will be aware of how they may encounter the subjects covered in their own future careers and personal lives--2.1 communicate important issues related to vector biology learned in class to others and the lay public.
