Course information provided by the Courses of Study 2019-2020.

This elective course will build on the knowledge of pain in veterinary patients acquired in Block V. We will address the prevention, recognition, and treatment of pain in a variety of species, primarily in dogs, cats, horses, and production animals. Species-specific pain scoring systems will be introduced. Both pharmacologic (including locoregional and interventional techniques) and non-pharmacologic treatment of acute pain (e.g., surgical, traumatic) and chronic pain (e.g., cancer, degenerative diseases, laminitis, and other pathologies) will be presented. Attaining a grade of "satisfactory" will be dependent upon class attendance, submitting a course evaluation, and completion of a weekly computer modules that will allow students to work through actual pain medicine cases.
