Course Description

This seminar will provide an overview of U.S. energy law, which has important implications for our nation's ability to achieve environmental goals. We will explore current policy debates and legal battles. These will range from recent attempts to bail out the coal industry to state efforts to mandate the use of renewable energy sources and energy-efficient vehicles. The class will focus on the states' role in crafting energy policy, the regulation of electric utilities, legal battles over oil and gas pipelines, and state renewable energy subsidies and mandates.
