This course will address the design, prototyping, evaluation, and implications of intelligent user interfaces, broadly defined as systems attempting to adapt to, support, and enhance individuals’ abilities to interact with the system itself, with information, and with other people. Topics will include designing the roles, responsibilities, and agency of the human and system; methods to model and predict people’s intentions and actions; interaction modalities that leverage these predictions, ranging from adaptive interfaces to voice assistants and chatbots; and evaluation of the effectiveness and positive and negative impacts of these systems. We will explore these in a variety of contexts including predicting command and application use; information search and recommendation; understanding the outputs and reasoning of intelligent systems; and support for interpersonal interaction and communication.
