Biotechnology viewed at the cellular and molecular level. Advances in biotechnology are broken down to their functional parts using the tools of biological engineering (thermodynamics, transport, kinetics, etc.) to understand how and why they work with an emphasis on design. Particular attention paid to gene therapy, synthetic biology, protein engineering, and nucleic acid engineering. Case studies in biomedical, bioprocess, and bioenvironmental engineering.
When Offered Spring.
Prerequisites/Corequisites Prerequisite: BEE 2600, biochemistry, linear algebra, ordinary differential equations, or permission of instructor.
- An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering.
- An ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs.
- An ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice for engineering practice.
