The Business and Science of Clean Energy

Commercializing new technologies requires a close collaboration between business managers and technologists. Technology strategy whether it involves in-house product development or assessment and scouting of technologies from the broader innovation ecosystem is essential for start-ups or multinational corporations in the rapidly paced arena of emerging technology markets. The purpose of this course is to provide students with the technical literacy to assess technology using specific examples with global impact in energy and sustainability. Technologies to be discussed include Energy Production and Storage: photovoltaics, fuel cells, batteries, exploration and recovery of fossil fuels; Environment: carbon capture and conversion, control of automobile emissions; Resource Management: water purification, desalination, oil exploration. Using case studies and team projects the course will provide the students with concepts and a framework for technology assessment, intellectual property asset evaluation, and business strategy alignment.
