Development of Human Sexuality

Course Description

This course examines a human's sexual life-course primarily from a psychological perspective, drawing on empirical and theoretical work from the fields of sociology, neurobiology, developmental, cognitive, and social psychology. We will focus on how many milestones of life influence our gender and sexuality in meaningful ways, including infancy, childhood, adolescence, adulthood, parenthood, and aging.

Prerequisites/Corequisites Prerequisite: HD 1170. Recommended prerequisites: HD 1150 and HD 3620.

• Apply multi-disciplinary perspectives to developmental theories of sexual change over the lifespan.
• Think critically about issues of sex, gender, and sexuality during class discussions.
• Develop writing skills for both an academic and layperson audience.
• Analyze critically the accuracy and scope of sexual science conveyed in both peer-reviewed journal articles and popular media through assignments.
• Discuss and think through research ethics in the context of studying sex, gender, and sexuality during different developmental milestones and understanding the ethical treatment of gender and sexual minorities.
