Course Description
Course information provided by the Courses of Study 2015-2016.
Students learn the theoretical basis of effective health promotion communications and develop effective nutrition communication skills through application in a variety of settings. Provides hands-on experiences in counseling, educational program development, and oral and written communications.

Permission Note Enrollment limited to: senior and junior students. Enrollment preference given to: senior dietetics students/Nutritional Sciences majors.
Prerequisites/Corequisites Prerequisites: NS 1150 and NS 2450.
Outcomes
- Identify key counseling theories and understand their application to a helping profession.
- Understand the theoretical basis for health promotion communications and for behavior change and apply theory to practice.
- Conduct and interpret individual nutrition needs assessment via interviews and observations, set goals, and evaluate progress.
- Critique weight management, non-diet, and popular diets for application in counseling and educational settings.
- Identify differences between optimal and disordered eating and identify counseling strategies for use with disordered eaters.
- Critique and develop nutrition education resources for application with the general public and low income audiences.
- Work with a team to design, implement and evaluate a nutrition education program for a specific audience incorporating issues of diversity.
- Promote and report impact of an educational program on audience through community networks including the newspapers and newsletters.
- Facilitate and evaluate a group learning process.
- Deliver an effective oral presentation.
Regular Academic Session. Choose one lecture and one laboratory.
