Leading from the Inside-Out

The premise of this course is that leadership is a particular way of approaching life, one that is critical to career success as well as fulfillment in life itself. The course begins with the inner work of leaders of becoming a reflective practitioner of personal development, and then turns to the outer work of leaders of working effectively with and through others interpersonally, in teams and in organizational systems.

Outcomes
  • Develop a critical understanding of contemporary leadership theories, styles, approaches and roles.
  • Examine and clarify personal values, missions, and vision for shaping and directing life and work.
  • Learn to align those inner motivations with personal actions, decisions, and communications in order to become more authentic , effective, and influential.
  • Build skills to communicate effectively in difficult conversations particularly around feedback and conflict resolution.
  • Practice skills for building and leading teams.
  • Create basic understanding of organizational complexity and leading systems change.
  • Create personal learning plans and leadership portfolio for supporting personal development.
  • Promote a habit of reflection to promote continuous learning a responsible leadership.

  • Graduate and UG Srs Only Add/Drop Dates: Non-Johnson Students ONLY: January 19th at 8:00am to February 10th at 4:00pm. You may add or drop a first-half class after February 10th with permission of the faculty. A late fee of $100.00 will be charged for each add or drop transaction. If you are dropping after March 23rd you will also receive a "W" on your transcript in addition to the late fees.
