Have you ever thought about what it takes to develop fluency in two languages?  How do people who are bilingual experience the world differently than those who speak a single language?  This class is designed to introduce students to the linguistic, literary, cognitive, and societal aspects of bilingualism across languages and cultures. We will examine the definition of bilingualism, the linguistic and cognitive processes involved in the acquisition of languages and literacy skills, the psycholinguistic tenets of bilingualism, as well as the relationship between language and identity, language maintenance and language loss, and issues of education and language planning.
