Course information provided by the Courses of Study 2015-2016.

This course will be offered from January 19, 2016 to January 22, 2016. As an intensive, one credit hour course, this seminar will focus in particular on the law of mass communications with references to print, radio, television, internet, and other forms of distribution. Students will review important cases, statutes, and other sources of law and practice. There will be a writing requirement, where students will research an appropriate topic and prepare an op-ed and a five minute radio program. These writing and radio production materials will be due later in the semester around Spring Break.  The class will meet for two hours per day for three consecutive days, and for three hours on the final day, when a musical performer and production professional will attend. Due to the intense nature of the short-course, all materials should be read and prepared in advance. Students who have taken LAW 6511 - Intellectual Property may find that material will complement this course. The course will be taught by University of Houston Law Professor Michael A. Olivas. He also has a regular radio show on the Albuquerque, NM, National Public Radio station KANW, "The Law of Rock and Roll," where he reviews legal developments in music and entertainment law, appearing as "The Rock and Roll Law Professor."
