This seminar will explore the role of aesthetics in prominent works of modern and contemporary political theory, emphasizing democratic theory and the aesthetics of popular sovereignty.  We will read theoretical works by Burke, Kant, Schiller, Marx, Nietzsche, Schmitt, Kantorowicz, Benjamin, Arendt, Lefort, and Rancière, while also examining the history of political aesthetics in absolutist monarchy, democracy, parliamentary liberalism, fascism, and Soviet communism.
