BIOMG 6870

Course information provided by the Courses of Study 2015-2016.

Course focuses on methods of genetic analysis to understand mechanisms of development. Lectures and problem sets are based on scientific literature, primarily of fruitflies, nematodes, mice, and zebrafish.

When Offered Spring.

Prerequisites/Corequisites Prerequisite: BIOMG 2800 (formerly 2810) and BIOMG 3850 or equivalents.

Outcomes
  • After completing this course, you can expect to: Possess a working knowledge of genetic approaches that are used to work out and analyze developmental pathways. [Emphasis is on methods and results developed for and with the model organisms Drosophila fruit flies, C. elegans nematods, Mus mice and Danio zebrafish].
  • Be familiar with, and able to interpret and analyze critically, current and "classic" ideas, results, papers and hypotheses in Developmental Genetics through readings, problem sets, and lecture/discussion of scientific research papers.
  • Be able to communicate orally or (briefly) in writing the ideas, results and concepts in Developmental Genetics.
  • Have made intellectual connections across the content of this course with information that you learned in other biology courses.
