In recent times there has been a lot more than usual criticism of aid and its consequences in Africa. Many have argued that aid does more harm than good in the recipient countries. At the same time, supporters of aid continue to insist that there is nothing or not much that is wrong with aid; it is only that the countries that need it do not get enough of it and in a timely fashion. A good part of the debate turns on what, besides aid, will help to solve Africa's many problems. Here attention turns on the role of trade and its impact on Africa's fortunes. Another strand of the debate turns on the internal dynamics of various African countries themselves. Students need to have an expansive view of aid and be aided in their choices respecting their attitudes towards global Africa.
