MUSIC 4130

Course information provided by the Courses of Study 2014-2015.

Through readings from the literature and analyses of musical examples, we will explore the phenomenology and structure of rhythm and meter in music. This course will first take a broad look at historical concepts of rhythm and meter in Western music from the Middle Ages to the present, with a nod to various non-Western traditions as well. Texts will include those that address philosophical aspects of time. Finally, we will examine selected works to assess structure and subjectivity in musical temporality. Grading will provisionally be through two short exams, a final written project, and class participation.

When Offered Spring.
