This applied course on planning and financing capital projects provides an essential knowledge base for financial managers in public and nonprofit organizations. The course makes use of case studies and is structured around seven fundamental areas of knowledge: fundamentals of finance and capital budgeting; risk and expected return; real options; net asset value and project financing; capital structure; public financing and not-for-profit organizations; company valuation. Each topic area will consider a case study involving a large-scale project that involves some level of government intervention.

When Offered Spring.

Prerequisites/Corequisites Prerequisite: A statistics course. Recommended prerequisite: Familiarity with financial statements and a working knowledge of Excel.

Outcomes
  • Students will gain or enrich their knowledge of the tools available to public sector managers to evaluate and finance infrastructure projects properly in North America and in developing countries, mostly through a range of case studies.
  • Students will gain and/or refine knowledge of analytical concepts relevant to the planning and management of large scale public project projects. Also student should gain a more disciplined/analytical understanding of decision-making and action at different government levels and through different sectors.
  • Students are challenged to develop thinking in ways that are analytical, critical, and creative and to develop their writing skills. Class participation to the case studies will be essential for the instructor's feedback to the students to be fully relevant.
  • Team work through case-study groups and the development of professional-like presentation skills will also be a very important skill that will need to be developed.
