Course Description

The Primary Care Surgery rotation is a two week experience designed to give students hands on opportunities to perform common general practice surgeries. Students evaluate patients as anesthetic candidates, perform procedures such as spays, neuters, dewclaw removals, cystotomies, gastropexies, amputations, mass removals, and umbilical hernia repairs, and provide comprehensive pre , intra , and post operative care. To build efficiency and repetition, students are encouraged to use HQHVSN surgical techniques and focus on ergonomic instrument handling, sound surgical technique, accurate medical records, and pain and anxiety management. Spectrum of Care decision making is reinforced through case rounds, journal club, and student presentations. Student surgeons are expected to practice critical decision making and teamwork. By the end of the rotation, students will strengthen physical exam skills, surgical competence, confidence, and efficiency. Licensed technicians provide consistent anesthesia support.
Prerequisites VTMED 5520.
