Course Description

Uses the tools of labor and public economics to analyze modern welfare states. What are the rationales for the level of government intervention in these states, and how do these rationales square with notions of market failure? What are the economic costs and benefits of taxes, transfers, and regulations in these states? Can voting models explain the growth and operation of welfare states? What are the impacts of these policies on labor markets? Possible answers to these questions are discussed.
Prerequisites ECON 1110 or ILRLE 2400; ECON 3110 or ECON 3130 or ILRST 2100 or AEM 2100 or AEM 4110 or CEE 3040 or CRP 1200 or ENGRD 2700 or HADM 2010 or HADM 2011 or ILRST 6100 or MATH 1710 or PSYCH 2500 or PUBPOL 2100 or PUBPOL 2101 or PUBPOL 3100 or SOC 3010 or STSCI 2100 or STSCI 2150 or STSCI 2200 or STSCI 3080 or STSCI 6010.
