Course Description
Course information provided by the 2026-2027 Catalog.
This lecture course explores the intertwined histories of art, architecture, and visual culture during the Global Cold War. Tracing a time period from the end of the World War II to the close of the twentieth century, the course examines the entanglement of politics and aesthetics through histories of decolonization, soft power, technological development, and consumer culture. Moving beyond a U.S.–Soviet framework, the course investigates the Cold War as a global phenomenon, tracing artistic exchange, architectural experimentation, and aesthetic production across Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and Europe. Despite geopolitical polarity, this time period is marked by increasing interconnectivity globally and the expression of modernity through technological development and popular media. Visual culture indexes, and comments upon, these social and economic transformations.
