Course Description
Course information provided by the 2025-2026 Catalog.
This course is designed to help you to write so effectively in workplace settings that you elicit the respect and admiration of your target readers, no matter whether you are writing in order to inform, to influence decisions and/or actions, or to convey a request. You’ll learn how to think in a disciplined and systematic way so that you prepare documents that accomplish your communication goals, meet your readers’ needs and expectations, and exceed those expectations (where possible and appropriate). As you prepare roughly one document per week, you’ll get detailed, customized feedback from the course instructor, enhance your more competence, develop justified self-confidence, and become more versatile and efficient. By focusing on email messages and memo-reports, you will learn how to manage the four elements common to all workplace documents: structure, content-value, document-design, and phrasing. You’ll also learn how to use AI effectively: so that, rather than outsource your thinking, you use AI as a helpful communication coach. The course is suitable for all students, no matter whether English is their native language or a second or third language.
