This course is designed to develop the relevant skills required for pre-harvest, harvest, and post-harvest management in a winegrape vineyard. Focused on hands-on, active learning, students will spend significant time in the Cornell University vineyards.

Prerequisites/Corequisites Prerequisite: VIEN 1104, VIEN 2204 (or concurrent enrollment), one semester of introductory biology, and one semester of introductory chemistry.

Outcomes
  • Examine the implementation and outcomes of different harvest strategies.
  • Describe the complex process of determining harvest timing.
  • Apply basic chemistry and biology principles to viticultural & enological techniques used around harvest.
  • Record and use harvest statistics.
  • Examine the effects and control strategies of key pests and diseases.
  • Assess the status of a vineyard going into dormancy.
  • Understand basic tractor operation and maintenance.

    Prerequisites: VIEN 1104, Introductory Biology, Introductory Chemistry, or by permission of instructor. Most class meetings will be hosted at the Cornell Orchards, 128 Crisp Apple Drive, Ithaca, NY 14850. Occasionally the class might meet in the assigned classroom. The instructor will provide clear instructions as to each class meeting location.
