Course information provided by the Courses of Study 2023-2024.

This course examines the intersections between race, gender, and sexuality through an investigation of the cultural productions and political theories of marginalized communities. We will engage with historical and academic approaches to care and kinship studies and examine how friendships, families, and community-building operate as key sites through which the intersections of race, gender, and sexuality figure in global, economic, and cultural structures. The overarching questions we will explore in this course are: How have activisms by marginalized communities influenced and shaped our understandings of care? What are the approaches, methods, and forms of knowledge that inform new turns in the fields of care and kinship studies? Through the study of course readings and media texts, we will learn about the interdisciplinary field of care studies and kinship studies and learn to write critically and thoughtfully about care and marginalization.
