This course is designed for graduate students who have a professional need to understand current macroeeconomic conditions, debates and indicators even though they may not be entering a career as a practicing macroeconomist. The course will focus on the short to medium term issues that are of typical importance to business and financial decisions, as well as to policy makers. The object of the course is to enable students to make sense of current economic policy debates and conditions and what they mean for both investment and consumption decisions.

When Offered Fall.

Prerequisites/Corequisites Prerequisite: Introductory microeconomics and macroeconomics, or permission of instructor.

Outcomes
  • Analyze the business cycle, particularly the "anatomy" of a typical business cycle as well as the commonly available indicators for the activities whose fluctuations determine the cycle.
  • Explain the structure of the Federal institutions and the nature of the economic policy making process, especially the Federal spending/taxation decisions and the Federal Reserve.
  • Define a simple macroeconomic model of the economy.
  • Apply this model to current economic conditions as well as to various possible policy initiatives that could be used.
